A reliable source for my research in esports tournaments is...well a tournament organizer. Locating one is easy to come by, you could open a streaming app such as Twitch and search for “tournament” and there's bound to be a plethora of live options. This is the basis of my primary research. I will be conducting interviews with streamers and organizers alike and comparing their experiences with my own. In addition, I will be using magazines, scholarly articles, and news as my secondary research using each method to validate the other.
Primary research involves collecting original data through methods like interviews or surveys, while secondary research uses existing sources such as books and articles. Primary research provides firsthand evidence, whereas secondary research connects ideas to broader conversations and established knowledge. While having no shortage of resources available is good, maintaining one’s own thoughts and observations is important. Effective research writing strikes a balance by weaving sources in thoughtfully, using them to support, not overshadow the writer’s perspective.
